Walter Riml (1905-1994). Schauspieler, Fotograf und Kameramann – eine biografische Skizze

El presente artículo describe la carrera del director de fotografía Walter Riml, originalmente instruido como ebanista, quien llegó al cine a mediados de la década de 1920 gracias a su talento deportivo como esquiador. Allí, se convirtió en un experto en tomas de montaña, colaboró en repetidas ocasiones con el director Arnold Fanck y pasó a formar parte de la llamada Escuela de Friburgo. A continuación, trabajó con Leni Riefenstahl du­rante la década de 1930 y, en la posguerra, en exitosas producciones de películas infantiles y regionales. Riml también fue director de fotografía para Reinl en Solange du lebst (“Mientras vivas”) en 1955. En la década de 1960, su trabajo se centró en la televisión, con algunas interrupciones puntuales para colaborar en grandes producciones, entre las que destacan The Great Escape (La gran evasión), de John Sturges, y James Bond 007 – Al servicio secreto de su Majestad.

This article outlines the career of cameraman Walter Riml, who was actually trained as a cabinetmaker and came to film in the mid-1920s thanks to his sporting talent as a skier. There he developed into a camera expert for mountain shots and repeatedly worked with Arnold Fanck, becoming part of the so-called Freiburg School. This was fol­lowed by engagements with Leni Riefenstahl during the 1930s and in the post-war period in successful productions of Heimat and children’s films. Riml also directed the camera for Reinl in 1955 in Solange du lebst. In the 1960s, his focus shifted to television work, interrupted by occasional collaborations on major productions, the most important of which were John Sturges’ The Great Escape and James Bond 007 - On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
