Abstract

This article outlines the career of cinematographer Walter Riml, who was originally trained as an artisan carpenter, entering the film industry in the mid-1920s due to his athletic talent as a skier. There, he developed into a camera expert for mountain shots and repeatedly worked with the director Arnold Fanck, becoming part of the so-called Freiburg School. This was followed by engagements with Leni Riefenstahl during the 1930s and, after the war, in successful productions of homeland and children’s films. In 1955, Riml also handled the camera for Reinl in Solange du lebst (“As Long as You Live”). In the 1960s, his work shifted to television, occasionally interrupted by involvement in major film productions, the most notable among them being The Great Escape by John Sturges and James Bond 007 – On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
