Abstract

In 2015, the Government of the island of Gran Canaria decided to transfer the Gran Canaria Film Commission from Tourism to the Departmente of Economic Promotion. From the beginning, an institutional strategy was designed that entrusted the Film Commission with the commercial management of sets with a total surface area of 6,000 m2 that include both a traditional physical production set and a virtual stage. In this interview, we spoke with Nuria Guinnot about the cultural policy strategy behind the joint creation of the set and the Film Commission. We also talked about the demographic and geographical conditions that make Gran Canaria a “miniature continent”, the Commission’s incentives to turn the Canary Islands into “The Island of Animation”, recent film productions and the role of culture in improving society.
